Q&A with with Dr. Tarun Gandhi

My doctor says that I have the beginning of a cataract in both eyes. What are cataracts? Are there any treatment options?

A cataract is a clouding of the eye's natural lens. It is very common to have cataracts, as most cataracts are due to age-related changes in the lens. Other causes for cataracts include excessive exposure to ultra-violet radiation, smoking, alcohol use, and certain medications. A person with diabetes also has an increased risk for developing cataracts at a younger age. For a patient that has early cataracts, we recommend that they wear sunglasses with 100% UV protection to help protect their eyes. Also, a change in eyeglass prescription can help temporarily improve vision. The use of anti-glare coatings can also help with night-time glare, which is one of the symptoms of cataracts. If the cataract is advanced, surgery is required. Our practice works in conjunction with a top surgery center in the area to ensure a successful surgical outcome for our patients.
